Former St. Lawrence County legislature chairman dies on Christmas

A former St. Lawrence County chairman who spent over 30 years serving as county legislator has passed away.

Stanley Albert Morrill, Jr. died at his home Friday, Dec. 25, surrounded by his family. He was 89.

Morrill was elected to the first St. Lawrence County legislature in 1973 and served for 30 years where he also served as chairman.

He served on the Hermon Town Board for 16 years, and was a member of the St. Lawrence County Democratic Committee for 37 years, and received the Silas Wright Award in 1998 for many years of dedicated service to the Democratic Party and his community.

He also served on the SLC Soil & Water Conservation Board of Directors for 13 years, was a director on the Northern Bulk Milk Cooperative Board, was a member of the Board of Directors for the First National Bank of Hermon for four years, a Board of Director on the Gouverneur & St. Lawrence County Fair Board for 33 years, and an honorary life member of the Board of Directors.

He was born in Canton on Jan. 23, 1926 to Stanley Albert and Helena (Hamilton) Morrill, Sr.

He graduated from Hermon High School in 1943.

He purchased a farm in the town of Hermon in 1946 and operated it as a dairy farm for 45 years, including 20 years in partnership with his son Fred. He then raised beef cattle for 16 years.

Morrill married Shirley Holland July 31, 1946 at the Norfolk Methodist Church, with the Rev. Frank Brown presiding. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, several children, a brother, 20 grand children and 33 great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to call at the O’Leary Funeral Service Tuesday, December 28, 2015 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

The Elk’s Lodge BPOE, Lodge #2035, will meet Tuesday evening at the funeral home for a 7:15 service.

Funeral services celebrating Stanley’s life will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the O’Leary Funeral Service, Canton.

Memorial contributions in Stanley’s honor may be made to the Hepburn Library of Hermon, 105 Main Street, Hermon, NY 13652.
