MASSENA -- Former St. Lawrence County Democratic Party Chairman Walter Basmajian died Monday.
Basmajian served as the Democratic leader for 50 years. He also served as director of the St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency for 30 years.
Basmajian served on a variety of boards and committees throughout his political career and was also a member of many civic organizations.
During his tenure as the county party leader he crossed paths with the Kennedys, the Clintons, Eisenhower, Truman, Johnson, Humphrey and many other well known politicians.
At 90 years old, he died following a year-long bout with Alzheimer's disease.
His funeral will be held Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Massena.
