PARISHVILLE -- A former Parishville-Hopkinton student is seeking help to pay for a liver transplant that is needed to help fight a hereditary disease.

Heather Maynard, a former North Country resident who now resides in North Carolina, has a hereditary blood disease known as acute intermittent porphyria.

She is currently seeking donations via gofundme.com.

“I get weekly infusions and deal with numerous symptoms everyday, including nerve pain and extreme fatigue. I've struggled and hoped for another options for 10 yrs. I just got the news that I am going to be getting a liver transplant,” she said on the website posting.

“I'm excited and scared for the transplant. It will cure my symptoms and for the first time in my adult life, I will be able to live normally. I'll be able to travel for more than 5 days, I won't feel really sick 4 days out of every week, and I can work a normal full time job.”

According to Maynard, the surgery has only been done one other time for treatment of porphyria in the U.S. However, it has been done more commonly in Britain with great success.
