Former Norwood resident receives award for extraordinary nursing

Posted

Elizabeth Gibson Adams, formerly of Norwood and now living in Pinellas Park, Fla., has recently been awarded the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing by All Children’s Hospital of St. Petersburg.

She has been a neonatal nurse at All Children’s Hospital for more than 25 years.

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses recognizes the very special work nurses do every day. It was established by the DAISY Foundation – an organization for the elimination of diseases attacking the immune system – in memory of J. Patrick Barnes.

Barnes’ parents established the foundation in their son’s memory because they had experienced firsthand the skills and compassionate care of many nurses.

The award is given quarterly to outstanding nurses in more than 315 hospitals across the country.

Elizabeth Adams is a graduate of Norwood-Norfolk Central School and is known locally as Betsy.

As a member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Norwood, she was the first female acolyte in the history of the church and one of the first female acolytes in The Episcopal Church nationally.

Pictured in the accompanying photo are three generations of female acolytes at St. Peter’s Episcopal Cathedral, St. Petersburg, when her granddaughter Penny McNeese served as an acolyte for the first time. Joining Elizabeth and Penny at the altar rail was the second generation female acolyte Laura Adams, daughter of Elizabeth and mother of Penny.
