A former Massena police officer and current state conservation officer has won the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association Officer of the Year shooting award.

ECO Jonathan Ryan began marksmanship competitions while in high school, shooting small bore rifle. After serving as a patrolman in Massena, Ryan was selected as an Environmental Conservation Officer Trainee in 1999. During the next year, 2000, Ryan participated in the New York State Police Olympics as a member of the Environmental Conservation Police team.

Since then, Officer Ryan has participated in IPSC and IDPA pistol competitions, and in Civilian Marksmanship Program high-power rifle competitions.

Ryan is also trained as a Glock and AR/15 armorer.

Ryan has been an instructor at DEC's Division of Law Enforcement at all DEC academies, and in the multi-agency David Sullivan Police Academy at SUNY Canton.

Ryan has also been involved in Cub Scouting as a certified instructor teaching BB guns and archery.

Ryan enjoys hunting and fishing with his sons. Participation in hunter safety instruction and in general interactions with the public have brought home to him the value of portraying the shooting sports and sporting traditions in a positive light, according to the NYSRPA. Ryan reportedly takes every opportunity to properly educate and inform people about firearms and the people who utilize them.
