Former congressional candidate Martz challenging North Country Sen. Little

Two of the Democrats who failed to secure the party’s nomination to try to unseat Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik had since thought about running against Sen. Betty Little, R-Queensbury, and one of them has decided to make a go of it.

Emily Martz of Saranac Lake, who finished fourth in the June 26 Democratic primary won by Tedra Cobb of Canton, has told the Glens Falls Post-Star that she has chosen to turn her attention to the 45th District Senate seat now held by Little.

Martz confirmed in an email to the Post-Star that she is seeking signatures before a July 12 petition filing deadline to appear on the November ballot as a Democratic candidate in November.

Meanwhile Katie Wilson of Keene, who placed second to Tedra Cobb in the June 26 Democratic primary said she too had considered a run for Little’s Senate seat, but decided against it.

“After much consideration I’ve decided not to run for Betty Little’s state senate seat at this time,” Wilson said in an email announcement she called “My next move” Monday.

“Campaigning over the last year has been profoundly inspiring, even altering, further cementing my commitment to the North Country,” Wilson said.

“That said, I'm deeply frustrated by our current political environment. Despite what’s transpired at the national level in the past weeks and months, only 16% of Democrats turned out to vote in the NY-21 Democratic primary. I find that number is staggering, even demoralizing, given the five campaigns and over $1 million spent trying to energize voters. It wasn't much better across the rest of the state, in fact far worse in some cases,” Wilson said.

“Contrary to popular belief, it appears the worse things get, the less people may actually be inclined to do something about it. Furthermore, I'm particularly interested in why a deep blue state like New York still has some of the most antiquated voting laws in the country.”

“I look forward to revealing my next move in the coming weeks. And expect to see me back on the ballot sooner than you may think possible,” she said.

Sen. Betty Little, R-Queensbury, is running for a ninth term in the Senate. She represents Parishville, Clare, Colton, Hopkinton and Piercefield in St. Lawrence County, plus to the east, Franklin, Clinton, Essex, Warren and Washington counties, making up the 45th Senate District.
