GOUVERNEUR -- The former commander for the James Maloy American Legion Post 65 was charged with stealing nearly $50,000 from the organization following an investigation by the Village of Gouverneur Police Department.
Current commander of the legion Gloria L. Weldon reported suspicious and possible misappropriated funds from two savings accounts, several checking accounts, an unauthorized credit card and fund belonging to the New York State Gaming Commission totaling approximately $47,973.
The savings and checking accounts are held by the legion and contain funds from daily operations and profits of the legion.
Donald A. Matice, no age or address given, was charged with five counts of third-degree grand larceny, felonies, first-degree falsifying a business record, felony and petit larceny.
Matice was arraigned by Gouverneur Town Justice Stanley H. Young Jr. and released under the supervision of probation.
He is to appear in court Jan. 7
Gouverneur police were assisted during the investigation by the New York State Gaming Commission, the St. Lawrence County District Attorney's Office, Community Bank and Gouverneur Savings and Loan Association.
