Following anticipated closed-door meeting, Massena town board may step closer to MMH asset transfer deal

MASSENA -- The Town Council will hold a special meeting that officials expect to be a closed-door session to discuss the Massena Memorial Hosptial asset transfer agreement.

The board will have a special meeting Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and Town Supervisor Joe Gray anticipates an immediate executive session to discuss the deal.

He said if the board takes action, it will be to approve a motion that would allow more information to flow between the town and hospital so they can advance negotiations.

“There are steps that need to be done in preparation for the asset agreement … We will hopefully approve one of the steps toward taking negotiations to another level,” Gray said. “There are some additional agreements that need to be in place before we can move into greater details.”

He said they are not close to finalizing an asset transfer contract.

“We are a long way from an asset transfer agreement,” the supervisor said.

MMH is in the process of becoming a private, non-profit entity. They are now owned by the Town of Massena.

Part of the transition process is negotiating how the town will be compensated for losing the MMH asset.

Gray did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
