The National Weather Service office in Burlington expects some flooding in Raquette River communities over the next several days.
Raquette River communities in eastern St. Lawrence County, including Potsdam, Pierrepont, Colton, South Colton, Hannawa Falls, Hewittville, Norwood, Norfolk and Massena, and areas in between, are all in the warning area.
The Weather Service flood advisory bulletin says that “the combination of recent rainfall and melting snow has created high flows on the Raquette River,” leading to an expectation of “unusually high water” over the next several days.
They say that “excessive runoff from recent rainfall and melting snow will cause elevated levels on small creeks and streams and ponding of water on country roads and farmland along the banks of creeks and streams.”
The weather forecasters expect “considerable lowland flooding. Most areas affected will be low lying fields and the yards and property of some residences.”
The Weather Service is recommending that people stay out of the water and staying away from the water’s edge, since “very fast water velocities and the cold water temperatures will create life threatening conditions for anyone in the water. Boaters, kayakers, and other water recreationists are strongly discouraged from being on the river.
