Flood watch posted, heavy rain expected tonight and tomorrow in St. Lawrence County

The potential for flooding is a danger people should be watching for tonight as heavy rain makes its way into St. Lawrence County this afternoon and tonight and continues Sunday.

A flood watch has been posted for the North Country by the National Weather Service for tonight through Monday morning.

The NWS is predicting heavy rain tonight and tomorrow. Total rainfall amounts by Monday morning will range from 1 to 2 inches with localized higher amounts.

Current river flows across the North Country are running very high and well above normal due to near record rainfall received this month, the NWS says. Additional rain falling on already saturated ground will cause some rivers and streams to rise above their banks, along with minor flooding of low lying and poor drainage areas. High flows on rivers and streams will also pose hazards to recreational water activities.

This afternoon, clouds will gather and there is a 30 percent chance of rain later in the day. Highs will be about 75 degrees.

Heavy rain is expected to arrive in the evening. Lows will be in the mid-50s with southeast winds turning to the northwest.

The chance of rain is 100 percent tonight and tomorrow.

Heavy rain continues Sunday with a chance of thunderstorms and highs near 60. Northeast winds will blow at about 10 mph and higher around thunderstorms.

Showers will persist tomorrow night, with new rainfall amounts up to half an inch.
