Flood watch in effect as warmth and rain today in St. Lawrence County could cause ice jams

A warm frontal rain band has moved across the North Country and temperatures are rising, giving meteorologists at the National Weather Service concern over river ice breakup and the potential for ice jams and flooding.

The NWS believes that the warmup and rainfall could be enough to cause ice movement and potential breakup, especially in smaller rivers. They have posted a flood watch for much of the North Country, including southeast St. Lawrence County, from 4 p.m. today through Sunday evening.

There will be periods of moderate to briefly heavy rainfall in the entire region this afternoon into early this evening.

As temperatures drop from the high 40s into the low 30s tonight, the rain could turn to snow. Winds are expected to become gusty tonight, up to as much as 30 mph.

The chance of light snow will remain tomorrow, mainly in the morning. Highs will be in the 30s.
