Flood watch in effect for St. Lawrence County through Wednesday; record warm temps possible

A flood watch in effect in St. Lawrence County through 7 p.m. Wednesday as potentially record warm temperatures and rain will lead to rapid snowmelt and river ice breakup, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Warm temps and precipitation will increase the threat for minor to moderate flooding across the North Country Tuesday and Wednesday, the service says.

Areas where ice jams remain in place from the mid-January thaw will be most susceptible to flooding, NWS says.

Highs today will be near 55 with rainfall amounting to between a half and three quarters of an inch possible, forecasters say.

Temps will not drop more than a couple degrees overnight, NWS says, with showers likely to continue overnight.

Wednesday will see temps begin to fall during the day with lows in the 20s overnight, NWS says.

The forecast through Monday is as follows:

Wednesday

Showers, mainly before 4pm. Temperature falling to around 53 by 5pm. South wind 11 to 15 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Wednesday Night

A 30 percent chance of showers before 8pm. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 23. Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Thursday

Partly sunny, with a high near 33. North wind around 6 mph.

Thursday Night

Partly cloudy, with a low around 20. Light and variable wind.

Friday

A 50 percent chance of rain after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. East wind 5 to 8 mph.

Friday Night

A chance of rain before 9pm, then a chance of rain and snow between 9pm and midnight, then a chance of snow after midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 31. South wind around 8 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Saturday

A chance of snow showers before 9am, then a chance of rain and snow showers between 9am and 11am, then a chance of rain showers after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42. West wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Saturday Night

A chance of rain and snow showers before 10pm, then a chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28. Light and variable wind becoming east 5 to 8 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Sunday

Rain and snow. High near 43. East wind 9 to 15 mph becoming south in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Rain and snow. Low around 29. West wind 14 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 42. West wind 7 to 11 mph.
