The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for southeastern St. Lawrence County until 3:30 p.m.

At 11:30 a.m., weather service Doppler radar indicated heavy rainfall capable of producing flooding.

Soils are saturated and area streams and rivers are running high from last night’s 1 to 4 inches of rain across the region, weather service officials said. An additional 1 to 2 inches of rain are now falling across the area.

The additional rain could cause rises on streams and rivers and flooding of low-lying fields, campgrounds and roads, officials said. Homes and businesses may also flood in flood prone areas.

Wanakena, Conifer and Tupper Lake are included in the flood warning area.

Weather officials say if you encounter flooding, seek higher ground immediately. Once people are safe, they are asked report any flooding to the National Weather

Service by calling toll free 1-800-863-4279 or by submitting a storm report at weather.Gov/Burlington.

Weather service officials say people should stay away from flood waters. Move to higher ground if you are threatened by flooding or are directed by emergency officials.

Do not drive into areas where the water covers the roadway because the road may be washed away beneath the water surface. It only takes a few inches of flowing water to carry away your vehicle.

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles so motorists should choice turn around don’t drown.
