Flood advisory for Raquette River communities downgraded to 'flood watch'

Posted

The flood advisory last week for Raquette River communities, which was extended this past weekend, is expiring today, and is replaced with a flood watch for all of northern New York through Tuesday night.

While the Burlington office of the National Weather Service believes that the threat of imminent flooding along the Raquette has passed, the high water levels in rivers and streams throughout the North Country and heavy rain predicted beginning tonight could bring back a flooding threat.

A “flood watch” means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts.

The Weather Service said storm total rainfall amounts of 1 to 1.5 inches “will lead to sharp rises on area rivers and streams, many of which are running high from recent rainfall. Minor to locally moderate flooding will be possible, especially along the smaller rivers and streams.”

“A warm front moving into the region tonight will stall and be the focus for moderate to heavy rainfall across portions of the region through Tuesday,” the NWS said. A few thunderstorms could also pop up, they said, “which may enhance precipitation rates.”

The specific forecast for St. Lawrence County communities predicts a chance of rain this afternoon, becoming heavy tonight, continuing Tuesday and Tuesday night in the North Country.

A good chance of rain persists through Friday, according to the National Weather Service office in Burlington.

High temperatures are expected in the 60s over the next couple of days, with overnight lows in the 50s.
