A provision of the controversial SAFE Act has brought to authorities’ attention five St. Lawrence County residents who are too mentally unstable to own firearms who have pistol permits.
A section of the law allows health care providers to report unstable mental health patients so law enforcement can see if they have a pistol permit, according to Syracuse.com.
A table reported on the website says there were 323 reports in St. Lawrence County, and in five instances, the person was licensed to carry a handgun. That breaks down to 3.1 reports per 1,000 people.
To our west in Jefferson County, six people dubbed mentally unstable were found to have pistol permits. To our east in Franklin County, one person fell into the category.
The SAFE Act was quickly pushed through the legislature by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the wake of the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.
