Five people displaced following Thursday morning fire in Hammond

HAMMOND -- A home is a total loss and a family of five is receiving Red Cross assistance following a Thursday morning fire at 360 South Woods Road.

Morristown Fire Chief Kevin Crosby said the 7:08 a.m. call initially came in as a chimney fire.

It started in a trailer, which firefighters were able to stop, and then spread to a house, which was destroyed.

“Morristown Engine 34 arrived on scene at 7:21 am with its crew of four and immediately attacked the fire at the north end of the building where a mobile home was 5 feet away from the house that was burning,” Crosby said. “Crews quickly knocked down the fire off the trailer and made entry into the trailer to stop any fire that had penetrated the building. After confirming that the trailer was safe, crews turned their attention to the house and all three attack lines were directed to the house to put out the fire.”

Jordan Sergel owns the house, which was not insured.

Two people were in the house and three were in the trailer at the time of the fire.

The mobile home received minor fire, smoke and water damage and the house was a complete loss.

The cause of the fire is believed to be an overheated woodstove or a chimney fire. The Morristown Fire Auxiliary, National Grid, town of Macomb and the state Department of Transportation also assisted on the scene.
