Five left homeless, cat dead following Ford Avenue fire in Ogdensburg

OGDENSBURG -- A Ford Avenue house was extensively damaged, five people were left homeless and their cat died as a result of a Thursday night fire.

The blaze at 925 Ford Avenue started because of what Ogdensburg Fire Captain Gerald Mack said was an improperly ventilated dryer.

“We believe it started due to an improperly vented dryer, which was located in a room on the first floor,” he said.

There were no injuries to firefighters or the two adults and three children living in the building. The family’s cat died.

The American Red Cross provided them with financial assistance for food, clothing and shelter, along with comfort kits with personal care necessities and infant items.

Mack said the house’s owner is Barry Kiah, who was selling it on land contract to the residents.

Firefighters were dispatched at 9:08 p.m., on scene three minutes later and back in service by 12:17 a.m., the captain said.

Ogdensburg Rescue were on stand-by, along with National Grid, St. Lawrence Gas and Ogdensburg City Police also responding, Mack said.
