MACOMB — A fisherman was rescued Sunday morning after falling through ice on Black Lake near Rollaway Bay, Morristown Fire Chief Kevin Crosby said.
Rescue personnel responded to the incident shortly after 9 a.m. and discovered a 46-year-old male floating in the water about 250 feet from shore.
Crosby said rescuers used ropes and electrical cords to make a line the man could grab.
After several attempts, the victim was pulled back onto the ice and brought to shore. He was then taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg for treatment of minor injuries and hypothermia, he said.
“Everything worked out well for the victim, our ambulance was already out on a call so it arrived on scene pretty fast,” Crosby said. “The guys in the ambulance did a great job and used what they could find and rescued this gentleman. He only has some minor injuries but is basically very lucky to be alive.”
Assisting on scene was the DEC and the state police.
Crosby asked residents “to use some common sense went going on the ice.”
“This man could have lost his life and put a lot of volunteers in harms way to rescue him,” Crosby said.
There was less than 2 inches of ice in the area where he was rescued. The neighbor who also assisted noted there was no ice there the previous day, he said.
