Fish for stocking again available from St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District

People with a place they would like to stock with fish can get orders into the St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District in its annual fish program.

Available are largemouth bass, brook trout, rainbow trout, and catfish. They average about five inches long. Prices are about $188 per hundred depending on the species. Minimum order is 25 fish.

Fathead minnows are also available as feed at a lower cost. Minnows also eat mosquitoes.

Trout will do best in cold ponds, according to the SLCSWCD. Rainbow can grow to 20 to 24 inches and weigh two to three pounds. Rainbows are larger, but brooks are more aggressive.

Largemouth bass do well in warmer ponds. They may grow to 18 to 19 inches and can weigh four to five pounds. A bass requires eight pounds of food to gain one pound of body weight.

Catfish, which are a better fish than the common bullhead, can weigh five to 10 pounds and will tolerate a wide range of water temperature.

All make for some great fishing and eating.

Orders are being taken until Oct. 2 with pickup on Oct. 16.

Proceeds of these sales benefit conservation projects in the county. The Soil and Water Conservation District has been serving county residents since 1957.

For more information or for an order form, phone 386-3582, or write or stop by the office at 1942 Old DeKalb Road, Canton, NY 13617.
