CANTON – A presentation for North Country residents to learn about St. Lawrence County’s application for a First Time Homebuyer Program is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, April 25 in Room 255 of the St. Lawrence County Courthouse, 48 Court St.
This homebuyer program will be funded through a $1 million Community Revitalization Fund that was awarded to the North Country Regional Economic Development Council in 2012.
Staff from the St. Lawrence County Planning Office will provide an overview of the county’s intent to apply for an $850,000 grant that would assist income-eligible people to buy a first house.
The program will be implemented across the seven-county North Country region of St. Lawrence, Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Lewis, and Jefferson counties.
The First Time Homebuyer Program helps people in low- to moderate-income households who are having difficulty saving enough to buy their first house.
If funded, the program expects to be able to help 28 households across the region with mortgage buy down and closing cost assistance, and minor repairs.
To receive financial assistance, eligible households must meet a lender’s underwriting criteria, and learn about household budgeting, mortgage applications, the day-to-day challenges of owning a house, and caring for and maintaining a house.
Thjose who are interested are invited to attend the meeting to learn about and comment on the project.
People with special needs who could benefit from the project are particularly encouraged to attend, according to the St. Lawrence County Planning Office
