POTSDAM -- The First Presbyterian Church recently celebrated its 200th birthday by sponsoring a new water well in Malawi, Africa.
The church sponsored the construction of the well through the Marion Medical Mission.
There is a profound need for clean drinking water in rural sub-Saharan Africa and the well will help meet that need.
The well was completed Oct. 3. It provides water for an estimated 100 children and 50 adults, and is one of a number of wells placed in service by the Marion Medical Mission.
The wells help eliminate cholera and other deadly diseases that cause excessively high child mortality rates.
They also save locals significant time by reducing the travel required to obtain water for daily needs.
