First Annual St. Lawrence International Film Festival names college finalists for October event in Canton

CANTON -- The St. Lawrence International Film Festival has chosen their student entry winners from the four colleges in Canton and Potsdam, SUNY Canton, St Lawrence University, SUNY Potsdam, and Clarkson University.

The SUNY Canton winner is director Odiri Igbayo, for the film “Where You Wanna Be.” Igbayo is a graphic and multimedia design major.

From St. Lawrence University, director James Corbett is a psychology and film studies major. His film, “Surreal,” is a horror comedy about a man living in a dream world who’s dealing with the terrifying things that reside there.

SUNY Potsdam’s Elissa Murphy was chosen for her film “One Second Every Day - Age 20,” documenting one second of every day in the director’s 20th year. Murphy is a music performance major at Crane School of Music.

And from Clarkson University, director Sharlene Lee won for the film “Face Value.” It examines the intricacies of humans separated geographically, specifically the isolation endured by the people left behind and the people leaving.

An honorable mention goes to director Nicholas Guay for “Ninja Break Up,” about a young man who attempts to profess his feelings for his girlfriend on a pier in the woods but their moment is ruined when a trio of uninvited guests show up to take things up a notch.

Each winner receives $250 and a one-year subscription to Vimeo Pro, video sharing web site.

The college-level winners are invited to compete against each other as Official Student Selections of the 1st Annual St. Lawrence International Film Festival, where the final winner will be awarded the Best Student Film award as determined by the festival’s jury of industry professionals. In addition to the award trophy for best student film, the winning student’s film in the festival, set for Oct. 22-25, will receive $250.

“We were thrilled to receive such a diverse collection of films for our first student competition.,” said Festival Executive Director Adam Paul. “The students of the Associated Colleges have much to celebrate in each college’s winners, and we look forward to seeing which film will be nominated Best Student Film in the fall.”

The St. Lawrence International Film Festival is intended as an annual world-class event to showcase the best in new and classic cinema in the picturesque St. Lawrence River Valley.

Through partnerships on both sides of the US-Canada border, the festival encourages cultural exchange, community engagement, film production, tourism and trade and celebrates the region’s unique natural, artistic and academic resources in a truly international event headquartered in Canton according to the press release announcing the student finalists.

Festival Executive Director Adam Paul has over 20 years of experience in front of and behind the camera, bringing a lifelong love of film and the entertainment industry to the St. Lawrence International Film Festival. Paul has made his mark as a writer, producer, director and actor. His work has screened at major international film festivals, on national television and Off Broadway.

Paul created and starred in the Starz Network’s half hour comedy Hollywood Residential and has appeared in scores of television shows, films and commercials, including How I Met Your Mother, One for the Money, The Informant!, Bones, Workaholics, Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
