MASSENA -- A temporary store selling fireworks allowed under a new, slightly relaxed state law is now open in the St. Lawrence Centre.
Majestic Fireworks, in the former Gamestop, sells devices considered class C fireworks, according to storeowner Allan LaValley of Winthrop.
He says they sell a variety of products that include sparklers, sparkler fountains, poppers and party snappers.
“Anything that shoots a projectile that explodes is illegal,” he said, adding that they only sell bamboo-handled sparklers since metal grips are still outlawed.
LaValley, who is also Massena’s postmaster, says they have been selling a lot of jumping jacks, which are similar to firecrackers but without the bang. He says people have taken a liking to morning glories, which is a multi-colored sparkler fountain and variety packs.
“They’ve been moving like crazy,” he said. “It’s been crazy busy.”
The law allows sales of class C fireworks from June 2 to July 5 and Dec. 26 to Jan. 2.
LaValley says he isn’t sure if he’ll re-open for the week leading to New Year’s.
“Depending on where I’m at, if I have a lot of product left over. It’s not worth building inventory for one week,” he said. “I may be crazy not to do it.”
Majestic Fireworks handles displays around the North Country. He says they will do the fireworks at the mall on July 3, as well as Waddington Homecoming, July 4 in Hannawa and Gouverneur and July 2 in Watertown at Thompson Park.
