POTSDAM – A house on River Road was heavily damaged by fire Sunday night, but two elderly occupants who were at home at the time escaped unharmed.
Norwood firefighters were called out at about 7:10 p.m. to 657 River Rd., and they along with volunteers from Potsdam, West Potsdam and Norfolk fire departments had the blaze under control in less than half an hour, according to Norwood First Assistant Chief Harold Loomis. Loomis said the Norfolk department contingent was released to stand by at their station.
Loomis said the only injury at the scene was to a Norwood firefighter who got some glass in his arm. The volunteer was taken to Canton Potsdam Hospital for treatment and released.
Loomis said there was heat and smoke damage throughout the single story structure.
The St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team pinpointed the basement as the place of origin of the fire. Loomis said they would return to investigate further.
The occupants have not been publicly identified this morning.
