POTSDAM -- A small fire in a campus steam tunnel forced the cancellation of early morning classes today at a SUNY Potsdam building.
The classes in Dunn Hall, to which the tunnel is connected, were cancelled and resumed at 10 a.m.
No one was injured in the fire, which was contained, and there was no major damage to the building, according to college spokeswoman Alexandra Jacobs Wilke.
She said it was “less a fire and more of a smoldering of insulation on a pipe." A “great, quick response” by both the Potsdam Fire Department and college staff began after an alarm was pulled at 6:50 a.m.
She said the outbreak was so minor that, while it was apparent there was smoke, firefighters had to use heat detectors to find the source.
“No one was injured in this fire, and there was only slight damage in the tunnel itself,” Jacobs Wilke said. “The building did not sustain any damage. Officials are continuing to investigate the cause.”
She said the college was grateful to “the Potsdam Fire Department and St. Lawrence County fire officials for their swift response to this incident.”
Local fire officials ventilated smoke and directed people around the area before the building was re-opened for 10 a.m. classes.
