Find best candidates for state Board of Regents, North Country Assemblywoman Russell says

Assemblywoman Addie J. Russell, D-Theresa, says she will work to make sure the best candidates are chosen to fill vacancies on the state’s Board of Regents.

Legislators have interviewed approximately 50 candidates that have expressed interest in filling seats on the 17-member Board of Regents.

The state Legislature is expected to elect the new Regents in March.

“The education of our children is of critical importance. When our children receive a comprehensive, well-rounded education, they are given the tools for future success,“ Russell said.

Her 116th Assembly District covers all St. Lawrence County communities along the St. Lawrence River, plus Canton and Potsdam.

"The Board of Regents, a group of education experts who shape education throughout New York State, plays an integral role in determining how our children are educated. That’s why we must ensure that we find the most qualified candidates to serve as Regents,” she said.

Chancellor Merryl Tisch and Vice Chancellor Anthony S. Bottar, Onondaga County, have opted not to seek re-election to the Board of Regents.

Lawmakers interviewed more than a dozen candidates seeking to fill the Fifth Judicial District seat, which includes Jefferson County, being vacated by Mr. Bottar. He has served on the Board of Regents since April 1, 1996.

The Fifth District Regent represents a mix of urban, suburban and rural school districts in Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, Onondaga, Oneida and Herkimer counties.

The Regents are responsible for the general supervision of all educational activities in the state and preside over the State University of New York and the state Education Department. The Board of Regents sets the standards for elementary and secondary education in the state.

“Over the past two weeks, I have joined my Assembly colleagues in conducting interviews to fill vacancies on the Board of Regents. We have discussed a broad range of issues ranging from the Common Core curriculum and rural transportation challenges to extracurriculars and safety standards,“ Russell said. "As we progress through the selection process, I will continue working to make sure the best candidates are chosen. Education issues have been and will continue to be a priority for me.”
