CANTON -- St. Lawrence County’s finance committee recommended filling several vacant positions at their last meeting.
The committee approved resolutions that would allow the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators to fill positions for a motor equipment mechanic, a keyboard specialist and an assistant conflict defender.
Although the county has had a non-essential services hiring freeze since 2008, administrators in the highway department and conflict defender’s office say the jobs are needed in order to maintain operations.
“This office has an extensive caseload and represents indigent clients in St. Lawrence County Court, St. Lawrence County Family Court and the many local criminal courts in this county,” the resolution said of the conflict defender position.
A separate resolution says maintenance shop personnel in highway department are currently undersized by 20 percent due to a resignation in February and the absence of an employee on unpaid medical leave.
All three vacancies are the results of resignations that occurred since August.
The St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators is expected to approve the resolutions at the March 3 meeting.
