A Rhode Island man has become the fifth person arrested in a St. Lawrence County Drug Task investigation that netted four arrests, weapons, $14,000 cash, and $10,000 in drugs last week in Canton and Potsdam.
James H. Walker, Jr., 21, of Newport, has been charged with conspiracy in the fifth degree, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.
Investigators allege that Walker had arranged to buy a quarter-pound of marijuana from a suspected dealer on Dec. 6 when he was intercepted by task force members and found to possess marijuana and cash for the deal.
Walker was issued appearance tickets.
That same day last week the task force arrested and charged:
• William G. Bowen 21, 14 Lincoln St., Canton, criminal sale of marihuana 3rd, (E felony) and criminal possession of marihuana 4th (A misdemeanor).
• Jordan C. Willette 22, 170 Pleasant Valley Rd, Potsdam, criminal sale of marihuana 3rd (E felony), open container and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle.
• Sam W. Gardner 21, 38 Judson St, Canton, obstruction governmental administration 2nd (A misdemeanor), resisting arrest (A misdemeanor), unlawful possession of marihuana (a violation).
• Matthew P. Vanhyning 23, 6232 County Rt. 27, Canton, criminal sale of marihuana 3rd (E felony) and criminal possession of a controlled substance 7th (A misdemeanor).
Armed with search warrants, police said they seized $14,000 cash, two and a half pounds of marijuana, 60 Oxycontin tablets, one illegal handgun and a shotgun.
The investigation continues and more arrests are pending, according to a statement from the task force.
