STAR LAKE – A faulty furnace chimney has been blamed for a fire that caused heavy damage to a home at 24 Griffin Ave., according to the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team.
The Star Lake fire department responded at 4:55 a.m. Saturday to the property owned and occupied by Robert Brown.
Fire departments from Cranberry Lake, Newton Falls, Harrisville and Fine responded. The Star Lake Rescue Squad was also on the scene.
The Piercefield Volunteer Fire Department was on standby.
The fire started when insulation in the attic near the faulty chimney ignited, investigators said.
Brown, who was treated for smoke inhalation, said he was awakened by a smoke detector to find heavy smoke in his home.
The Star Lake department returned to the station at 8:30 a.m.
