MASSENA -- Village police say a father and son are facing charges after an April 19 traffic stop that turned violent.
Tyler J. Ward, 18, of Bishop Avenue is charged with second-degree assault, a felony, resisting arrest, a misdemeanor and disorderly conduct, a violation. He is also charged with failure to signal and obstructed view, police said.
William J. Ward, 43, of Bishop Avenue is charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration, also a misdemeanor, police said.
They were charged at 10:09 p.m. that day on Park Avenue.
Chief Adam Love said officers pulled over the Wards' vehicle for failure to signal. Tyler Ward became “verbally combative toward patrols" when they tried to take his father into custody, the chief said.
The younger Ward then charged at officers while screaming and swearing, fought with them and ultimately headbutted Ptl. Dustin Currier in the face, causing a bloody nose and a migraine, according to Love.
Both Wards were arraigned in Massena court in front of Justice Eric Gustafson the following morning. They were each released after posting bail, $500 for William Ward and $2,500 for Tyler Ward, according to police.
