Farmers urged to apply for state agriculture energy efficiency grants

Posted

Assemblywoman Addie Russell (D-Theresa) is urging farmers to consider applying for grants from the $3.2 million available in the state Agriculture Energy Efficiency program.

The grants are designed to help farmers reduce energy usage. The state Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is the administrating agency.

“Area farmers will potentially be able to save up 75 percent of the cost of electricity and gas efficiency investments,” said Russell.

“The cost of energy is an escalating operating cost on farms and saving money in this area goes right to their bottom line,” she continued.

“Equipment such as hot water reclaimers, variable speed vacuum pumps as well as other equipment which will increase energy efficiency on the farm while decreasing energy cost may be funded with this grant opportunity. Energy audits will be performed to show farmers where their biggest savings can be attained.”

The Assemblywoman is contacting NYSERDA to schedule an outreach seminar on this grant opportunity. Details will be announced in the near future. Anyone interested in attending the event may call the district office at 786-0284 or 386-2037.

Russell represents the 118th district, also called the River District, which includes the northern portion of St. Lawrence County as well as Canton and Potsdam.
