Family nurse practitioner joins staff at Canton-Potsdam Hospital; seeing patients at Brasher health center

POTSDAM – Family nurse practitioner David Dempsey has joined the medical staff at Canton-Potsdam Hospital and is seeing patients at its Brasher Falls Community Health Center at 899 State Highway 11C, Brasher Falls.

Dempsey earned a doctoral degree in nursing practice from Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pa. in 2008.

He earned a bachelor ‘s degree in nursing from the State University of New York in Albany in 1986 and a master’s degree in nursing from Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, La. in 1998.

A certified family nurse practitioner, Dempsey is also a certified MammaCare specialist, trauma nurse specialist, mobile intensive care nurse and emergency certified pediatric nurse. He holds additional certifications in basic life support, advanced cardiac life support, pediatric life support, and advanced trauma life support.

Dempsey has over 13 years of family nurse practitioner experience, most recently with Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone. He has five years of previous experience in the United States Army Nurse Corps, where he served as a charge nurse in intensive care units. He also served as head nurse of the ICU and supervisor for critical care during Operation Desert Storm.

Dempsey has experience as a teacher/trainer including most recently as a clinical preceptor for nursing students and family nurse practitioner students, and as a member of the clinical faculty at Frontier School of Nursing in Moira. He has trained others in such areas as EKG and neurological assessment, trauma, basic cardiac life support, advanced trauma life support and paramedic trauma/emergency care.

He is a member of the New York State Nurse Practitioner Association and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Family nurse practitioners are highly trained advanced practitioners who collaborate with physicians. Much like a family doctor, family nurse practitioners diagnose illness, conduct exams, and prescribe medication. These nurses can also serve as their patients’ sole health care provider and run their own private practices.
