PIERREPONT -- A family of five is without a home after a Monday morning fire.
Pierrepoint Fire Chief Tim Green said a chimney fire destroyed a house at 3 Plains Road, which Stephanie Huckle and William Huckle shared with three children. They were purchasing the building on a land contract, Green said.
“It started as a chimney fire, creosote," Green said. "He tried to put it out."
The chief described the house as a total loss.
He said fighting the fire proved difficult because of the structure's age.
“It was difficult. It was an old country store with additions added on over time. It had a single roof with tin over it, so it was difficult to get through," according to Green.
Fifty firefighters from Pierrepont, Colton, Russell, Pyrites, Hannawa Falls, Parishville and Potsdam showed up and gave aid. Canton came with their ladder truck, the chief said.
“We had a pretty good turnout with the neighboring departments for tankers and manpower once we got things going," Green said.
He said they received the inital call at 10:32 a.m. and were back in service at 3:49 p.m.
