MASSENA -- The Transportation Security Administration and Federal Aviation Administration are taking issue with Massena International Airport’s security plan and the runway markings, Highway Superintendent Frank Diagostino told the town board Wednesday.

“The airport security plan has to be rewritten … it’s a big job,” Diagostino said, adding that it’s over 100 pages long. “We’ve got some issues to deal with when it comes to gates and signage.”

He also said federal officials were miffed that the airport maps are not marked as “sensitive information.”

“All our maps have to have ‘SSI’ on them, ‘sensitive security information,’ and I don’t know how to do that on a map that’s already printed somewhere else,” Diagostino said.

“For a small airport to go through all this … it’s bureaucratic bologna,” Councilman Albert Nicola said.

In addition to that, the FAA says markings on the runway and tarmac need to be redone.

Diagostino said they granted an extension and is allowing until spring to get it done.

“It’s not a matter of buying a couple buckets of paint and a roller. It’s $70,000,” Town Supervisor Joseph Gray said.
