OGDENSBURG — ExxonMobil Oil Corporation donated 4.127 acres of land on Van Renesselaer Point and $10,000 for future maintenance and management to the Fort La Présentation Association.

The donated property, as well as the property currently owned by the association, were remediated by ExxonMobil under the oversight of the Department of Environmental Conservation.

“We are very pleased with the donation of land and funds for future upkeep from ExxonMobil Oil Corporation,” said Fort Association President Barbara O’Keefe. “The additional property will allow the Association to construct parking, walking trails, greens space or storage adjacent to the 21 acres the Association currently owns.”

Matt Ezell, ExxonMobil’s commercial portfolio manager for the property, stated that he “was gratified that ExxonMobil was able to support the association’s reconstruction of historically significant Fort de la Présentation through the land donation.”

The association’s current 21 acres, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, will be used for historic interpretation of Ogdensburg’s rich history. The association is starting in the fall with an approximate one-acre interpretive-recreational trail and the Abbé Picque Monument Plaza and War of 1812 Peace Garden. The association will also use its currently owned land for a Visitors’ Interpretive Center, Native American village, and reconstruction of Fort de la Présentation.

The Fort La Présentation Association is a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) Corporation chartered under the University of the State of New York. The mission of the association is to build a historically accurate reconstruction of Fort de la Présentation and related structures in proximity to the original site and to oversee the operation of the site. Its aim is to unite the community in support of the perpetual undertaking. The goals are to educate, collect, to preserve or maintain, to develop, to research, to document, to interpret and to recreate educational and historical ventures of interest to Ogdensburg, and the St. Lawrence Region on both the U.S and Canadian sides of the border.
