POTSDAM -- Potsdam students recently heard first hand from a student who witnessed one of the worst terrorism attacks recorded.
Mateen Ahmed went to school in Peshawar, Pakistan on Dec.16, 2014, expecting the day to be like any other. By the end of that day he had witnessed an attack that killed 148 students, teachers and staff. Over 100 others were injured, according to a press release from Potsdam school.
Many of the victims and injured were close friends of Ahmed. He is now a foreign exchange student at Indian River High School.
He came and talked to students on April 10. He walked them through that terrible day and told how he was able to survive the painstaking hours before he was rescued.
He talked about the bad name that terrorists are giving to his religion. Ahmed is convinced that the key to solving the terrorism problem is education, according to the school district.
In addition to his studies while he is here, he has been speaking to groups of all ages about the attack and the need for change to conquer terrorism. The whole student body at Potsdam High School attended Ahmed's presentation. After, he answered questions from students and staff. Many students stayed after the presentation to meet him.
