Two Europeans have been sentenced in federal court in Albany for crossing into the North Country from Canada illegally resulting in misdemeanor immigration charges.
Wilson Gavilanez-Pacha, 39, and a citizen of Spain, was sentenced Sept. 1 to time served, six days in jail. Gavilanez-Pacha admitted that on Aug. 27, he crossed the border by boat across the St. Lawrence River at Hogansburg before being stopped and arrested by Border Patrol.
Hamza Mounaime, 24, a citizen of France, was sentenced Sept. 26 to time served, 12 days in jail. Mounaime admitted that he walked across the border just east of Fort Covington then took a taxi to Massena, where he boarded a bus. A Border Patrol Agent inspecting the bus passengers encountered Mounaime, determined that he was illegally present in the United States, and arrested him.
