At the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s request, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing its proposal to designate New York’s portion of the St. Lawrence River as a vessel waste No-Discharge Zone (NDZ).
The zone includes the whole stretch of the river along St. Lawrence County, from Chippewa Bay to Rooseveltown.
EPA will accept public comments through April 25.
This proposed action is aimed at improving and protecting water quality in the St. Lawrence River and would result in a ban on the release of sewage from boat toilets and holding tanks, according to a press release from the state DEC.
More information, including instructions for commenting on the proposed NDZ, is in the Federal Register announcement at https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2016/03/24/2016-06701/new-york-state-prohibition-of-discharges-of-vessel-sewage-notice-of-proposed-determination.
