POTSDAM -- Eligible Lawrence Avenue Elementary School students in grades pre-kindergarten through fourth will receive healthy food items for weekends and holiday vacations beginning in November.
Each Friday the students will be given a snack pack consisting of eight food items to take home with them for the weekend.
“We are delighted to partner with New Hope Community Church and the Potsdam Lions Club to address a critical need in our community,” PCS Elementary Principal Jennifer Gray said.
Snack packs will be prepared on Thursdays and delivered to the school for distribution to participating students.
About 30 percent of Lawrence Avenue Elementary School students are eligible for a free or reduced-price lunch.
“We want to ensure that no child goes hungry over the weekend, and that every child is fully prepared to be an active learner when her or she returns to school,” she said. “We're extremely pleased by the enthusiastic support already expressed by the Potsdam community, including other service organizations and youth groups. Together we can make a positive difference in the lives of our young students, and let families know that we care. The addition of the Snack Pack program is great news for the families at Lawrence Avenue. In our community we do not always know just how much a family might be struggling and we want them to know we see how hard they are working to provide for their children. We want to help families in any way we can to ensure are students are getting adequate nutrition,” Gray said.
