MASSENA — The fire at the St. Regis Nursing Home on Tuesday morning reportedly originated at an electrical outlet in a resident’s room.

Ike Bogosian, administrator of the nursing home, credited his staff and the Massena Fire Department for how they handled the fire.

A staff member discovered the blaze during a routine check, he said.

“She did everything she was supposed to do,” Bogosian said. “She evacuated the resident first.”

Another staff member pulled the fire alarm which put the nursing home into Code Red, which alerts staff and residents of a fire.

Staff use the acronym R.A.C.E, which stands for rescue, alarm, confine and extinguish/evacuate.

“Thank you to the fire department and various emergency agencies for their extremely quick response and assistance,” Bogosian said.

The person living in the room was transported to the hospital as a “cautionary” measure but returned to the nursing home a short time later and seemed to be doing well, Bogosian said.

The resident has been temporarily relocated while maintenance staff do some painting following the fire. Maintenance workers have also tested all other outlets in the buildings since the fire to be sure they are safe, he said.

Damage was considered minor.

St. Regis Nursing Home, 89 Grove St., has 160 beds at its facility. It offers single and double occupancy rooms.

The fire was reported around 2:45 a.m. Sept. 25. Massena police also were on scene.
