Election Day hotline now available to St. Lawrence County voters; quicker result postings expected tonight as new procedures take effect

An Election Day hotline is available to St. Lawrence County residents, according to a release from the Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman.

The line was set up to ensure that all eligible voters are able “to cast an effective ballot in today's general election.”

Schneiderman urges voters to call the office’s hotline at 800-771-7755 or email civil.rights@ag.ny.gov at any time between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. to report issues or problems at the polls.

Meanwhile Gov. Andrew Cuomo said voters can expect to see results reported quicker and more accurately due to modifications in the reporting process.

Cuomo said recent reforms in procedures for county boards of elections to follow when closing polls will result in earlier reporting of unofficial election tallies.

Earlier this year, Cuomo signed legislation authorizing the use of portable memory devices (PMDs) to gather and transmit unofficial returns to the BOE, among other measures.

“My office is committed to full enforcement of the Voting Rights Act and other federal and state laws that require equal access to the ballot box,” he said. “Our Election Day hotline will help ensure that all eligible voters across our state are able to exercise their constitutionally protected right to vote on Election Day.”

Previously, BOE personnel used hand-written tallying to gather the unofficial returns, often resulting in delays and factual errors on election night. Poll workers were required to cut up the tabulated results tape that was produced for each district and tally the total number of votes for each race. After being transported, that information was then manually entered into the official databases used by the Associated Press.

To report a complaint about discriminatory voting practices today, call the Office of the Attorney General's Hotline at 800-771-7755 or email civil.rights@ag.ny.gov at any time between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.
