OGDENSBURG -- Eight people are displaced after what firefighters describe as a fire that caused “very extensive damage” to an apartment complex at 1111 Lafeyette St. early Thursday morning.
Ogdensburg Fire Department Captain Jerry Mack said although the blaze remains under investigation, he believes it was accidental.
“I haven’t made a determination yet, but I believe it to be accidental,” Mack said. “It started on a second-story balcony.”
He said firefighters were dispatched at 3:33 a.m., on scene four minutes later and back in service by 7:30 a.m.
There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians, Mack said.
The American Red Cross says they are providing aid to four adults and four children who lived there.
Mack said the fire mainly burned the second-story ceiling in the attic area, so it could be repaired.
“I believe this building can be rebuilt from the framework that’s there,” Mack said. “Due to extensive smoke and water damage throughout the structure, it would be to be completely gutted.”
Property owner Christopher Corriveau is insured, Mack said.
