Assistant Superintendent Steve Todd of the St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES speaks at the ongoing education conference.

CANTON -- Assistant Superintendent Steve Todd of the St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES addressed 225 professional educators and students at the 21st Constructivist Design Conference at St. Lawrence University, Monday morning at the start of a week-long session.

Teachers, administrators, students, and staff developers from as far as Florida, California and Canada as well as many parts of New York State join participants from ten schools in St. Lawrence County at this working conference.

Their purpose is to improve their strategies for encouraging students to be active learners who take responsibility for their own learning. It will also focus on motivating students through hands-on tasks and project-based learning.

The conference requires professional educators, parents, and students to work in teams to develop a product or plan to be used in their home school districts.

Participants will include nearly 100 North Country teachers and administrators from Brasher Falls, Canton, Gouverneur, Heuvelton, Massena, Morristown, Norwood-Norfolk, Ogdensburg, Potsdam, and Salmon River.

Representatives from St. Lawrence University and SUNY Potsdam also plan to attend. The conference generates about $300,000 for the regional economy each year.
