EBT cards in St. Lawrence County won’t work for a few hours Sunday

The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) wants to alert recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Temporary Assistance in St. Lawrence County that from midnight until no later than noon this Sunday, Sept. 21, their benefits will be unavailable while a change is made to the EBT system.

Recipients of those benefits are asked to plan ahead, OTDA says.

For the past several months, OTDA has been working throughout this process so that as many people as possible in the affected communities are aware of the EBT system downtime.

This interruption in services is necessary to switch to a new contractor to operate the system. During this time, SNAP recipients will not be able to make food purchases with their SNAP benefits using the EBT cards, and Temporary Assistance recipients will not be able to use their EBT cards to make purchases or withdraw cash. There will be no impact on Medicaid recipients’ ability to use their cards to access medical benefits.

After the conversion to the new contractor is complete, OTDA says it believes current EBT cards will work as usual. There is no need for cardholders to replace their cards, they say.

Those in need of food assistance during the EBT downtime period are encouraged by OTDA to visit your nearest food pantry or soup kitchen that is usually open on Sundays.
