CANTON -- A total of 584 degrees were awarded Sunday at St. Lawrence University’s commencement ceremony.
Of those, 561 candidates received bachelor's degrees (362 Bachelor of Arts and 199 Bachelor of Science) and 23 earned master's degrees.
The five most popular majors this year, in descending orde,r were economics, government, psychology English and biology.
Famed Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau was keynote speaker. He urged the graduating students to retain the habit “of seeing – purposeful seeing – seeing what's in plain sight, what's off to the side and what the world looks like through the eyes of others.” For a complete text of his speech, click here.
Also speaking was SLU Pres. William L. Fox, who reminded students their degree is “something that is yours for life, something that cannot be garnished or erased.” His complete speech can be viewed here.
Others making commencement addresses included Mary DiSanto-Rose '75, and Martha Swan, who received honorary degrees.
Students Mike Petroni '12 and Rachel Yalowich '12 also addressed their classmates.
