NORWOOD – Dollar General is planning a new store in Norwood across Main Street from the Nice N Easy store.

The developer expects to break ground in the spring and be ready to open in September, according to Mayor Jim McFaddin.

That would be a seventh Dollar General store in St. Lawrence County, with one each now in Ogdensburg, Canton, Gouverneur and Potsdam and two stores in Massena.

“We’ve been negotiating with the developer and the real estate agent” on zoning and permits, McFaddin said, and “we just rezoned it last Monday,” Dec. 22.

“They’re bringing their final plans together now, and they plan on applying for the permits,” McFaddin said.

The store will be 9,300 square feet, a bit larger than Dollar General’s standard store footprint of 9,100 square feet.

Dollar General’s site criteria include a location along a retail corridor with good traffic, high visibility, and easy access.

The market demographics they look for in a new store site include a median household income of less than $75,000 and a population of at least 4,500 in the area they intend to serve, according to the company’s web site.

Dollar General currently operates more than 11,000 stores in 42 states.

The company has made an offer to buy rival Family Dollar Stores, which they just extended until Jan. 30.
