DOH decides no medical pot in Gouverneur

There won’t be a medical marijuana dispensary in Gouverneur, the New York State Department of Health announced today.

They granted licenses to five companies to grow and dispense the plant for medicinal purposes.

DOH scored 43 companies that applied for the program and approved the five that scored highest in their ranking system.

North Country Roots, which sought permission to operate in Gouverneur, ranked 23rd.

The closest dispensary to St. Lawrence County will be in Clinton County.

Columbia Care NY will operate one of its four dispensaries there.

New York lawmakers earlier this year passed the Compassionate Care Act, one of the most restrictive medical marijuana laws in the country.

It allows doctors to prescribe the plant and its derivatives for serious and life-threatening illnesses including cancer, AIDS and severe cases of epilepsy.
