MASSENA -- Disabled American Veterans Chapter 171 recently held an early Christmas event for 27 veterans at the St. Regis and Highland nursing homes.

The DAV paid for the event with some of the donations acquired in their Forget-Me-Not drive.

DAV members purchase assorted necessities and candy for those that can have candy. The treats are then individually bagged with the names of the veterans on each bag.

This year, four members of the DAV made the rounds at both homes distributing the gifts to the veterans.

“It is an uplifting but also sad event with different reactions from each veteran. We have heard many stories of their experiences during their time in service, some sad and some humorous,” said Fred Cockayne, DAV Chapter 171 commander. “This event would not be possible without the generous support of the local residents during our fundraising drive.”
