LISBON -- The Dig Squad, part of the Seaway Smash Club family, can be found practicing every Saturday in the Lisbon gym. This team focuses on fun, skill building, and teamwork.

They give girls in the area who are passionate about volleyball the chance to play through the winter allowing them to continue to develop their skills during the offseason.

The team starts off their practice with varied warm ups including a yoga series. Then they have fast paced practice.

“The girls are taught to build each other up knowing that a positive approach leads to greater improvement and personal success,” said Scott Wilhelm, club director. “The coaches, Sarah Pickard and John “Mik” Mikolay, are both passionate about the sport and dedicated to helping the girls develop a continued love of the game.”

Sarah is a former player and coach for junior volleyball and soccer at a private school. She is a local small business owner and is mother of two daughters.

Mikolay has coached youth sports for the past 10 years. He coached his two sons in soccer, basketball and baseball over the years. He has also helped to run various programs and events for tyouth programs. He has played with various volleyball teams while serving in the military, as well as being a tournament and league player locally.

Seaway Smash Volleyball Club is currently in its third season. In the first 2 seasons the club focused solely on its competitive volleyball teams. This season the club expanded to include a K-6 program that ran this past fall plus the Dig Squad that started at the end of the Section X season.

Seaway Smash VBC is in the process of becoming a non-profit organization to help provide volleyball players not only with the opportunity to grow as athletes, but also help to develop the character of our players through organized sports teams.
