POTSDAM – Village Trustee Eleanor Hopke, snubbed by fellow Democrats in August when she failed to receive the party’s endorsement to run for a second term, received the most votes in a three-way Tuesday.

Hopke, who ran on the Sense in Government line, received 357 votes, retaining her seat on the village board.

Political newcomer Nick Sheehan, a Democrat, won the other seat with 267 votes. Fellow Democrat Jim Bunstone, a former county legislator and school board member, came in third, with 153.

No Republicans ran for the trustee seats. Democratic Trustee Ron Tischler ran unopposed for mayor, replacing Steve Yurgartis who chose not to run again.

For town council, incumbent Democrat Rosemaria Rivezzi, with 681 votes, and fellow Democrat Ann Martin Carvill, with 649 votes, captured two open seats. A total of 178 write-in votes were cast, but on election night, it was not possible to determine if all of them were for Eric Matott, who mounted a write-in campaign.

The election results are unofficial and do not include absentee ballots.

Town Clerk Cindy Goliber, Republican, and Superintendent of Highways John Keleher, Democrat, faced no opposition in the election.

Likewise, town council member Rollin Beattie, a Democrat, ran for the supervisor’s spot unopposed. Marie Reagan did not seek reelection to the post.
